They did it first

One thing I often find myself thinking is ‘that child does XYZ and little B doesn’t, and then think this means I must be a bad mum.’

I’m slowly trying to learn that every child is different and how they develop is not always at the same rate and that this is OK.

B has 2 birthday buddies.  One is crawling, and pulling herself up and nearly walking, The other friend isn’t moving at all. B can crawl backwards and will stand supported but walking isn’t really on his agenda and why would he need to crawl forwards! And at swimming today another mum was saying to her little girl ‘look X, that is how you stand up’ willing her to do it.

Today was B’s 10 month development check and I was surprised and really pleased that he nearly ticked every box and the Health Visitor was really pleased with him.

I know in my head that every child develops differently and people have said by the time they all start school they will all be able to walk and talk and crawl and are unlikely to have a dummy but sometimes it’s hard not to compare your child.

At the same time:  I love watching him learn new things and am excited that he is not doing everything yet because we have so much more to explore. Mr G came to get me today to show me what B could do. He has a shape sorter cube and his favourite game this week (apart from the Velcro on my sandals) is putting as many things as he can find / reach into the box and then taking them all out.  Mr G hadn’t seen him do this and it was so exciting to see the pleasure of seeing him watch his son develop.

So I’m thankful that Mr B is developing well and excited at the thought of future development.  I am also really thankful that he is healthy and able to learn new things and hope that I can stop comparing him cos he is perfect as he is.

i am also glad that as b and his friends develop they will all be good at different things. i would hate to be the same as everyone else.  I love this cartoon and every time i see it i have to laugh cos so often we try and be like others and are just like fish out of water trying to climb a tree.
